Childhood Friendship

Our lifeline in the womb is the umbilical cord. This cord is our first experience of “being in relationship.” Through this cord we receive our very sustenance. We learn from our inception that connection means survival. Children are programmed to be social, to make intimate connections through friendship. They create energetic cords of connection with others, much like the actual physical cord shared with their mother. It is important that we not dismiss, or minimize the angst that accompanies learning how to make friends and maintain these friendships. Friends are in effect, their lifeline. If we model healthy ways of building, nurturing and maintaining frienships, our children will learn how to create intimate connections that will last a lifetime.
